Smart Paste

Enable site-specific link replacement in Chrome and control whether pastes prompt or run automatically.

Connect the extension to SimpURL

Install the SimpURL Smart Paste Chrome extension, open SimpURL in a browser tab, and sign in. Keep one signed-in SimpURL tab open while you use the extension. There is no separate extension password or setup: Smart Paste uses that signed-in SimpURL browser session.

  1. Use Chrome 119 or newer and open a normal SimpURL tab.
  2. Sign in to SimpURL, then open the Smart Paste extension popup.
  3. If the popup says Connect your SimpURL session, select Sign in to SimpURL and return to the popup.

Enable one site at a time

Smart Paste remains inactive on sites you have not enabled. The popup asks Chrome for permission when you enable the current site. A saved Smart Paste site still needs that browser permission before the content script can run there.

  1. Open the site where you publish and select the extension icon.
  2. Select Enable on this site, then accept Chrome's site-access prompt.
  3. Confirm the popup shows Smart Paste is ready here and the site is enabled.
  4. To review saved hosts, open Settings > Link setup > Smart Paste sites.

Choose the paste workflow

Paste one URL or a paragraph containing several URLs into a supported text input, textarea, or contenteditable editor. The extension holds the original text while it checks the site and creates replacements, then inserts the shortened links in place.

  1. Leave Shorten automatically off to review the prompt, then choose Paste original or Shorten link for one URL, or Shorten N links for a multi-link paste.
  2. Turn on Shorten automatically to skip the confirmation prompt on enabled sites.
  3. Use Keep analytics together to reuse an existing matching SimpURL instead of splitting analytics across duplicates.
  4. Keep the editor open while the extension shows "Shortening this link..." or "Shortening N links..."

Recover safely from a problem

If the extension cannot confirm the request, it preserves the original paste and tells you to check Links before retrying. A duplicate prompt offers Paste original, Create new, or Reuse existing. Password, payment, and one-time-code fields are excluded from Smart Paste.

  1. If the popup says Access needed, enable the current site and grant Chrome permission.
  2. If it says Connect your SimpURL session, open SimpURL and sign in again.
  3. If a request times out, check Links for completed links before trying again.
  4. Use Settings > Link setup > Smart Paste sites to remove a host you no longer want enabled.
