Set campaign UTM attribution

Add campaign-level UTM defaults that follow assigned links without overwriting destination parameters that already exist.

Configure the campaign defaults

  1. Open Campaigns, create or edit a campaign, and expand Advanced campaign setup.
  2. Under UTM attribution, fill in Source, Medium, and Campaign. The corresponding keys are utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign.
  3. Select Use campaign name to generate a lowercase, hyphenated utm_campaign value from the campaign name, or enter your own value.
  4. Select Add optional term or content to add Term and Content, which map to utm_term and utm_content.
  5. Select Create campaign or Save changes, then assign the links that should use the defaults.

Know when attribution is applied

Campaign UTM defaults are added when an assigned link redirects to its destination. SimpURL adds only missing UTM keys. If the destination already contains a key, that destination value wins.

  • The allowed keys are utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content.
  • Each UTM value can be up to 200 characters. Empty values are ignored.
  • The same defaults apply to a closeout replacement URL when Redirect to a replacement is selected, again without replacing existing keys.
  • UTM values describe the campaign context; analytics Source is derived from the visitor referrer or QR attribution and is a separate field.

Best practices

  • Use a consistent lowercase naming convention for source, medium, and campaign so downstream reports group values predictably.
  • Keep the campaign UTM defaults broad and stable; put link-specific differences in the destination URL when the destination already owns those keys.
  • Test a real assigned link and inspect the final destination URL. Do not rely on a copied editor value alone.
  • Record client, channel, or creative identifiers in campaign Metadata when they are useful for internal organization but should not be sent to the destination.

Troubleshooting

  • No UTM parameters appear: confirm the link is assigned to the intended Active or Scheduled campaign and that the campaign has saved non-empty UTM values.
  • A value did not change: inspect the destination URL. Existing destination UTM keys intentionally take precedence over campaign defaults.
  • The campaign name did not produce the expected value: Use campaign name normalizes it to lowercase and hyphens; edit utm_campaign manually when you need a different convention.
  • A scheduled link does not redirect yet: scheduled campaigns remain unavailable until their Start date.
